The reason they approached me is because they are connected to me in some way. At some point they had a need for, or an interest in, online marketing and found me through an online search or were pointed in my direction by one of our happy customers. Because they like what I have to say, offer, demonstrate or prove through real time activity, when the time is right for them they connect and we move forward on various projects. We have been working with the HMA for around 7 years and so they know I’m competent. The others have only been conversations but they know of my existence through online marketing and as we move towards 2010, social media networks will be the vehicle of choice for those who feel passionate about a subject and want to connect with more like minded folk. Dave Clarke of NRG Networks has posted two comments on me recently ... the first was "check this guy out, he’s brilliant" (or words to that effect, I can’t recall the actual ones!!) The second was another mention in his blog after I sent him a thank you email, forwarding the message I had received from Google Alerts showing his first mention of me. All these mentions, especially if they contain a contextual link, will help to increase the strength of your website as links naturally added help to boost your sites popularity. In the old days this was because link building was a hot seo topic. Today it is more to do with people reading content on web pages / blog and wanting to know more... they can click on a link to relevant content and so get to know more and that you exist!
